Kay Chemical Company Breaks Ground on $11 Million Greensboro Expansion
GREENSBORO, NC – Jun 25, 2015 – Kay Chemical Company, a Triad-based company for more than 80 years, today celebrated the official groundbreaking of its $11 million, 37,000-square-foot building expansion at the company’s headquarters in Greensboro, N.C. The two-story expansion will accommodate Kay’s growing quick service restaurant (QSR) and food retail businesses, which provide cleaning, sanitizing and food safety solutions to industry customers. The addition also will provide updated research, development and engineering space, and include a state-of-the-art training center.
This expansion will add 45 new positions over the next three years.

In attendance at the groundbreaking event were North Carolina Commerce Secretary John Skavarla, City of Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan and several Greensboro city council members. Speakers during the event included Bobby Mendez, Ecolab executive vice president and president, Global Services and Specialty; Bob Sherwood, senior vice president and general manager, Global QSR; Commerce Secretary Skvarla and Mayor Vaughan.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
Kay is an Ecolab company. Founded in 1932, Kay specializes in cleaning, sanitizing and food safety programs and services for the quick service restaurant and food retail service markets. Kay’s customers include some of the world’s largest quick service restaurant chains, fast-casual restaurant chains, supermarkets, mega-retailers, coffeehouses and donut shops. Kay employs approximately 1,100 people throughout the world including chemical and process engineers, chemists, microbiologists, regulatory specialists, technical account experts, marketing and sales, and support staff. Approximately 500 work at Kay’s Greensboro headquarters and manufacturing facility and approximately 50 employees work at the company’s Winston-Salem distribution center.
In addition to the estimated $29 million economic impact of Kay employment in the Triad area, the company contributes nearly $500,000 annually to local organizations, including the United Way, American Heart Association, local elementary and secondary schools, and other organizations.
